Theatre

The sun will come out tomorrow, especially if you get tickets to the Roxy Regional School of the Arts’ performance of “Annie Jr.” The show will be at the Roxy Regional Theatre on select days in May and June, with the last performance on June 9. The musical contains all of your favorite songs from the show, including “Tomorrow” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed without a Smile.” Plus, since it’s the junior edition, it’s perfect for your young kids.

So, just what is “Annie Jr.?” How is it different from “Annie?”

This musical was specially edited so young kids could play the parts. It’s shorter than the original musical, so your young kids can hang in and watch each and every part without losing interest. That makes this the perfect play for the entire family.

Now that you know what “Annie Jr.” is, let’s look at some fun facts about “Annie.” You might be surprised by what you don’t know about the movie by the same name.

It Was Hugely Expensive

You know it takes a lot of money to make movies, but did you know “Annie” was the most expensive musical ever made when it was released? It cost around $40 million to make, which was a huge amount of money for movies in the 1980s. A lot of that money went to securing the rights to the Broadway play it was based on. Sadly, the film didn’t recoup much of the money it spent, so it was technically a flop. That still hasn’t stopped people from loving “Annie” all these years later.

Martin Charnin Hated the Movie

Martin Charnin created, directed, and wrote the lyrics for the Broadway hit “Annie,” and he sold the rights to the film’s producers. He probably regretted that since he hated the movie. He thought the acting was bad and the relationships were weak. Plus, he didn’t think they did a good job with the song “Tomorrow.”

The Stars Weren’t the First Choice

Can you imagine anyone but Carol Burnett playing Miss Hannigan? Bette Milder was actually the first choice to take on the role. Also, Albert Finney wouldn’t have been Daddy Warbucks if the producers had their way. It’s even rumored they wanted Sean Connery and Cary Grant to take on the role.
