Unexpected Beauty – Nov. 4

You still have time to pick up tickets for Unexpected Beauty on Nov. 4. Just as the name suggests, you will find unexpected beauty in each of these pieces.

The Orchestra will begin with Anton Webern’s Langsamer Satz. That translates into “slow movement,” and it rumor has it that he came up with the concept while hiking through the mountains of Vienna. Listen for the Brahmsian romanticism during this movement, and get ready to be transported to Vienna.

That will be followed by Alban Berg’s Sonata, Op. 1. This is a departure from the standard sonata. Normally, sonatas consist of at least three or as many as four contrasting movements, but Berg had a different idea. The entire sonata contains a single movement, and it centered on the key of B minor. This unique sonata sounds even better in person.

The evening will end with Orchestra playing Arnold Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony, Op. 9. This might be a single-movement work, but it’s a little more complicated than that. In reality, it consists of five movements, but they all take place at the same time. Just imagine hearing this live.
